Android librarian

As I was reading the responses for the "Librarian as guardian" question, I remembered a movie I watched (I can’t remember the name of it now) in which any person who owned a phone had access to a library from it (Maybe it was The DiVinci Code). When I first saw the clip, I thought how cool to be able to access information from anywhere. But upon further reflection, I am not so sure I like the idea. Could it be, and I certainly hope not, that a face-to-face encounter with a librarian will be a thing of the past? Will virtual office hours and digital libraries wipe out the need for a friendly face who offers assistance? In the future, will a library bring up the image of a cool, sterile room filled with workstations and not a cozy atmosphere with rows upon rows of books. I find the prospect of being able to access a library from anywhere exciting and devastating. It is exciting because I believe that it is the main goal of creating digital libraries and devastating because I feel the end of the librarian, as we know them today, may be drawing to a close. Which means the birth of a new type of librarian should be happening. Is this what we are? Are we the new librarians for the future or are we the prototypes for the future of library and information science since we are going through the transition stage with the new digital technology? Will we truely be needed to help the patron once digital technology is commonplace in society? Or will we be in the background making digital copies of paper material to share on netwroks?
